Training your balance on land is a good way of improving your wakeboarding performance whether you are a beginner or advanced level wakeboarder.

Some key points on balance training for wakeboarding

It is possible to train and improve your balance every day but not always possible to go wake boarding every day. Training your balance will help stop the progress you made in your wake boarding skills from regressing when you have extended periods of time between sessions.

Balance training will help improve your reaction time, coordination and agility, by enhancing these skills you will see an increase in performance in your wakeboarding or any other sport you do.

You can practice movement patterns needed to perform certain tricks over and over again on land until the movement patterns become second nature to you, this will help speed up the learning curve for learning how to perform new tricks.

Balance training with balance boards to get better at wakeboaring

Balance training with equipment such as balance boards is a good way to keep pushing yourself and progress your balance skills once you have mastered some bodyweight balance skills.

The down side to training with a balance board is the possibility of taking a hard fall that could lead to a minor or severe injury.

This is a decision you will have to make for yourself, but with that said there are some things you can do to help minimize the risk of using a balance board.

You can help minimize the possibility of injury when using a balance board by mastering body weight balance exercises before moving on a balance board, wearing safety gear such as the helmet and pads that skaters wear or having an object or wall next to you that you can grab to help stop yourself from falling.

What is the best balance board for getting better at wakeboarding?

There are many different types of balance boards available. This can make the task of finding the right balance board confusing.

Various types of balance boards are made with the needs of the users in mind some balance boards are made with improvising performance for skaters, surfers or snowboarders while other are made for general fitness or physical therapy.

The way I determined the best balance board for getting better at wake boarding was by looking at the types of tricks or skills needed to be good at wakeboarding than choosing the board that will allow you improve your skills in all the different type of skills used in wakeboarding.

Wakeboarding tricks and skills can be broken down into a few categories.

  • Rotations- You needed a balance board that will allow you do spins so you can practice the correct movement patterns to do spins.
  • Ollies-  are often the first step of more advanced tricks, so having a balance board that will allow you to practice and hone your ollies is important.
  • Aerials- while a product like a tramp board would be better for getting better at certain aerial tricks, practicing ollies can help you to learn how to taking off and how to stick your landing. Also practicing rotations on a balance board can contribute to improving your rotation while in the air.

I think the best choice for a balance board for improving your performance in wakeboarding would be the Indo board rocker.

This board was made with wake boarders in mind. It is even similar in size to a wake board.

This board is unique because the board has a slight concave to it, this makes less of the board sit on the roller and will allow you to practice spinning and rotation moments that you use while wakeboarding.

Keep in mind this board is considered an advanced level balance board because the board will react quickly to any movements you make and the board does not have any stoppers on the bottom of the board to stop it from shooting out from under you.
